Spider-Man

Spider-Man movies have been a fan favorite for the ages, but the recent release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, starring Tom Holland and Zendaya, proves that the franchise has reached its peak. Fans everywhere anticipated its release and it earned a record-breaking $360.1 million dollars opening weekend in North America alone.

Spider-Man movies first hit theaters in 2002, starring Tobey Maguire, and the warm reception and Oscar nominations of the first Spider-Man sparked two more sequels in 2004 and 2007. With Spider-Man 2’s Oscar win for Best Visual Effects in 2004, it became clear that the early aughts Spider-Man movies were redefining the world of comic book adaptations, and ushering in a new era of superhero movies. Spider-Man proved that superhero movies could be a box-office hit, with many fans on social media joking that Tobey Maguire walked, so Tom Holland could run.

In the 2010s, director Marc Webb rebooted the franchise in collaboration with Sony starring Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone. Despite the mixed reception of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014), a massive deal with Sony and Marvel Studios brought Spider-Man back on the map and into the Marvel Cinematic Universe a couple of years later. Since 2016, Tom Holland has led as Spider-Man in multiple movies in the Avengers universe, as well as the solo movies Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far From Home, Spider-Man: No Way Home, and Spider-Man Brand New Day.

Spider-Man’s wide appeal to viewers of all ages and levels of familiarity with the comics, ensures that these stories stand the test of time. Spider-Man continues to dazzle viewers as it combines larger than life, high-energy, action-packed superhero moments with deep emotional exploration and relatable human storylines. The success of the Spider-Man franchise shows no signs of slowing down as audiences flock to see the films on the big screen.
