New Edition
The New Edition Story did more than chronicle the rise of the R&B group. It captured the essence of brotherhood, ambition, and the influence of Black vocalists on popular music. Premiering on BET in 2017, the three-part biographical miniseries became the network’s first scripted miniseries. Each of New Edition’s six members served as co-producers, giving the show a direct connection to the people whose lives it portrayed.
The series follows the group from their hometown of Boston to becoming one of the most popular boy groups of the ’90s. It also depicts the realities of fame as the group navigated fluctuating dynamics, business challenges, departures, and solo careers. The miniseries not only exemplifies the realities of being a young artist, but also illustrates how that experience can be uniquely shaped for young Black men navigating an industry that often profited from their talent without protecting their relationships or futures.
Collins’ faith in the project was a testament to the increasing popularity of the biopic format. The series’ success showed that Black biopics can capitalize on fan loyalty while preserving the complexity of their stories. Its impact extended beyond nostalgia: it encouraged networks to invest in stories centered on Black artists and helped redefine the biopic as a space for representation and creative ownership.
