Charlize Theron

Oscar-winning actress and producer Charlize Theron is known for her adventurous, action-filled roles, but her path to Hollywood was anything but predictable. Born August 7, 1975, in Benoni, South Africa, Theron grew up in a turbulent household touched by domestic abuse. She was also teased at school for her appearance and health conditions that left her as an outsider among her peers.

Despite these challenges, her childhood shaped the resilience that would later define her career. Reflecting on her upbringing, she said, “There was turmoil in my family, but the surroundings were so great. I was usually barefoot in the dirt...you had to entertain yourself.”

Theron developed an early passion for dance and began her professional journey at 16 after winning a modeling contract that took her to Italy. She eventually moved to Los Angeles, where she pursued acting while living paycheck to paycheck and struggling to find work. Her persistence led to early roles in 2 Days in the Valley (1996) and The Devil’s Advocate (1997), but it was her transformative performance as serial killer Aileen Wuornos in Monster (2003) that established her as a major Hollywood talent. Theron won the Academy Award for Best Actress for the role and went on to star in acclaimed films including Mad Max: Fury Road (2015), Atomic Blonde (2017), Bombshell (2019), and The Old Guard (2020). Most recently, she appeared in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey (2026).

Beyond acting, Theron is a passionate advocate for social causes. In 2007, she founded the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project (CTAOP), which supports African youth in the fight against HIV/AIDS. She is also a longtime advocate for women’s rights and marriage equality.
